The Performance
Getting There, a highly entertaining play delivered with enthusiasm and energy, focuses on encouraging young people to take responsibility for their personal safety on their way to school, whether on foot, bicycle or public transport, by allowing them to empathise with recognisable characters and to become fully engaged in the action.
The Plot
Getting There follows Mario, a boy just starting secondary school, and his dad, who is desperate to keep him safe. What begins as an ordinary Monday morning quickly spirals into a comic and heartfelt battle of wills: Dad wants to drive Mario to school, while Mario insists he’s ready to go on his own.
Through traffic jams, embarrassing outfits, and near misses on the road, their journey becomes a powerful exploration of independence, trust, and the push-and-pull of growing up. Along the way, the audience is invited to step in, offering advice and making choices that shape how father and son find their way forward.
Developed in line with UK road safety regulations, Getting There highlights the importance of safe travel to school, whether walking, cycling, or scooting. Funny, fast-paced and thought-provoking, it asks an essential question: how do we balance safety with freedom as young people begin to travel independently?
